OUR CONSUMERISM CHALLENGE
Every month, we will set a new challenge for ourselves and for all of you who want to join and support us. We want to create awareness, to learn and expose ourselves to different environmental and social issues. We do not sit back, but to make change happen... little by little. Any small change we make does have a positive effect and impact on ourselves, people who surround us and the communities in which we live. We invite you to join us, every month, for a little challenge...

Helpful Hints
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. "This wastes up to 9 litres of water a minute or 26,000 litres of water per family, per year."
- Be resourceful. "Mend it rather than replace it."
- Ask questions
- Encourage each other to be conscience. Be a part of the "We Are What We Do" movement.
- Make coffee at home or use a thermos when buying from cafes; save the paper cups. "We use eight billion disposable cups a year in Canada."
- Look to friends for support and words of wisdom
- Use reusable containers
- Use cloth bags and recycle plastic ones. "500 years from now, the 8 billion plastic bags we use this year in Canada will still be here."
- Borrow and barter
- Visit the library and get a library card. "Recycle your books. Give them to a charity shop, your local library, or just leave one lying on a park bench - although you might want to check the weather forecast first."
- Buy locally
- Have dinner parties instead of going to restaurants
- Make your friends gifts, perhaps bake them something.

This is a tough one, here's how you can look at it; You're supporting a local company. Even though the beans are not produced here, you're still contributing to your local economy.
You can make the decision to not drink coffee for the month and for that matter, not eat or drink anything that was not made in Canada. It's your choice. BUT, I think it's ok to support the local companies, even if it's not made here.
I think another thing to think about is making sure it's fair trade coffee, if a big part of the focus is to support local business and also to NOT support slave labor and harsh working conditions, to say the least.
